Many of you have asked for help in determining what math options are available and how to use these options within TTSD.
First, we do not endorse any of the options listed below and cannot speak to the efficacy of any of them. However, based on the number of people asking, we feel that it may be helpful to provide some information regarding process and the options available. Also, please note, that this does not represent an all-inclusive list of options. These are simply the ones we’ve heard of.
Each of you must investigate for yourself what would work best for your circumstance and your child.
Math Help and Tutoring: Middle School and High School
(This may assist those who wish to remain in math class but want additional instruction)
• Kumon tutoring – www.kumon.com
• Sylvan – www.sylvanlearning.com
Sylvan offers many flexible options, tutoring, online classes, homework support, and accredited courses for high school credit – If there is a lot of interest, they would be willing to have a “Sylvan information” night at their center.
• Math practice and workbooks:
Math practice on-line
Straightforward Math practice workbooks - available at places like The Learning Palace
Math Options: Middle School
(For those who wish to completely remove their child from math at TTSD middle schools)
Unfortunately, many of these options have costs associated with them – you will need to research which option works for your family.
Note: There are no specific math requirements for “graduation” from middle school into high school. Therefore, you have many alternatives open to you. You will need to coordinate with the school’s counselor for scheduling. According to the district and ESD, NO specific paperwork is required to exempt your child from math class. Oregon State laws require students in 8th grade to be assessed. (EXCEPTION: If your 8th grade student has already been assessed this year, no additional assessment will be required prior to leaving middle school). Assessments should be coordinated through ESD - Educational Service District.
• Homeschooling entirely or in math only (the district has agreed to allow partial homeschooling)
These resources may assist you.

• Sylvan – www.sylvanlearning.com
Sylvan offers many flexible options, tutoring, online classes, and homework support.
• Quest Academy – www.questschools.com
• Keystone Middle School - http://www.keystoneschoolsonline.com/
• PSU provides online independent study courses - http://www.istudy.pdx.edu/how_hs.php
(there are no age restrictions for these classes)
Math Placement into High School after any of these alternatives: When forecasting for high school, request the next class in the sequence as long as your student has successfully completed previous classes and mastered the subject matter. As always, it is your responsibility to forecast to your student’s math level.
Math Options: High School
(For those who wish to completely remove their child from math at TTSD high schools)
Unfortunately, these options have costs associated with them – you will need to research which works for your family.
Note: Graduation requirements for high school include 3 years of mathematics – Algebra I and above. These credits must come from accredited schools. Therefore, your options are more restrictive than middle school. You will need to coordinate with your student’s high school counselor to ensure these credits are transcripted. We recommend discussing this with the school counselor prior to enrolling in any course. Again, Oregon State laws require assessment of students at least once while in high school. Assessments should be coordinated through ESD - Educational Service District.
All options listed here are recognized by TTSD for accreditation.
